In the episode "Red John's Friends," the Director of the CBI coincidentally leaves "to visit (his) sister in Hawaii" just prior to Red John's murder of the ex-con who at least indirectly knew him. We also found out that Red John has access to the CBI Computer network and can manipulate his way through communications with Patrick and the others. My fiance and I were subsequently thinking that Red John might be the CBI Director. What will need eventually to be explained is who exactly was having "(his) feelings trifled with," the specific context involved and who Patrick himself might think Red John might be. Surely after five years--now six--of agonizing guilt, he remembers in great detail the specifics of the person he was conning and how that person might connect to Red John. Will no doubt be a great television ride...

"I can’t possibly see how it could be Jane or anyone on the CBI team after the last episode. After the fake killings Jane, Lisbon and Rigsby would have been together every moment (with Cho and VanPelt following very closely) up until Jane left on the Bicycle. The fact that RJ didn’t find out until the FBI found out clearly indicates that it’s not anyone on the team. Also since they were together after the fake shooting it pretty much clears out any alternate personality angle. Besides RedJohn really has to be someone who is well connected and powerful and none of them qualify." You might be thinking too narrow here. For all we know, Red John ist just a mastermind who gives orders to his disciples. Every member of the team including Jane could have given precise instructions beforehand, without causing any suspicion. Also, Red John might be lying about the point at which he realised what was going on. I think we shouldn't rule out characters just because they could not be physically present when the murders occurred. I don't think that such a strict approach would do any justice to the complexity of the matter and the fact that Red John himself appears to be a brilliant mind.

Advertised as being one of the most intense episodes of the season, Blinking Red Light involves the CBI team trying to find a serial killer while Jane encounters a blogger who has devoted his life to finding the killer.
Sounds like a HUGE episode! Chat away!

Will Cho's addiction to pain pills haunt him? will he finally seek treatment for his back injury? Will this episode give us some answer or leave us with more questions?

Well, I must say that I love all the Mentalist episodes. I really do, it's one of the rare shows that I can say that there hasn't been an episode yet that I dislike. However, this one did disappoint me. While Jane and Lisbon were hilarious as always, I actually felt that too much time was spent on them and not enough on Cho. My little sister has always complained that the show ignores Cho, Van Pelt and Rigsby too much, but it's never bothered me until now.
That being said, I loved the parts with Brother Joseph and I was genuinely surprised at who the killer was (usually they're on my suspect list, but not this time) and I'm actually more worried about Grace than Cho. She seems to be more and more isolated from the team this season. Gosh, this is the season or the worry for me!

extremely interesting and thought provoking episode. a fantastic return for the cult leader, Bret Stiles. yet again a couple of RJ mentions (as in all 3 of Bret's appearances). The line from Bret to Jane "how are those demons of yours? still chasing you?" was extremely creepy, was he talking in general of possibly in 3rd person? and then Jane's reply of "I'm chasing them" was met by a demonic smile on the face of the religious leader as the elevator doors closed? does Bret just think Jane is crazy or is Jane actually talking about Bret (under the assumption he is RJ, which i am not saying that he is, i hope he is not). best scene of the episode in my opinion was when Jane and Lisbon went down to arrest Bret as he was sat at the table with two men who lets be honest, looked a bit like body guards. when Lisbon raised her voice at Bret and demanded him to come with them, Bret's army stood up behind 'Jisbon' and stood their until Bret assured them that everything is under control; only problem is with this scene is that they could of done a lot more with it e.g some booming music or some kind of phrase from Stile's, just to add to the atmosphere but it was a very good scene. also what about down in the cells with Stile's and Grace? basically hypnotizing her...(its a common assumption RJ is a mentalist with skills just like Jane), it appears Bret is to a mentalist or something of the sort. also during that scene there was an awful lot of references to the color red don't you think? hints from Bret or yet another red herring? who knows but all in all a damn good episode! :) 5/5 (as is all the episodes of season 4 so far, with the exception of blood and sand which i rate at 3/5!).

Jane and RJ's take on reality is theatre and make believe. To quote the greatest political document of all time: "Our power is force and makebelieve." That is reality theatre in the world as you know it and in the tv series.
The Mentalist acts, directs and to some extent produces his own movie within the series. He casts other characters in the roles he contrives for the ends he chooses. In short, the spells of the Mentalist (that would be Jane / Red John) are stronger spells than most of the other characters are able to cast.
Jane the 'non-mystic' creates invisible nets, puts a spell of revelation upon a murder weapon, appears to others in the role of consultant but is in fact leading the investigations. The boundaries are in the mind as he tells Lisbon.
People create boundaries / roles for themselves as social beings. Jane is not entertained by these roles generally. And he opposes such roles when they get in the way of what he wants.
Knows the boundaries are in the mind, he is able to manipulate the boundaries. He can effortlessly climb inside someone else's cage and start messing with the reality they create for themselves and how others perceive it. Jane and RJ do this in different ways - but it is the same operation.
Jane games most of the people in his life at a very high level and sets them up for his plays.
Jane shares his take on Reality with Cho as they enter Tamsin Dove's house. (Cho is afraid of witches) "The universe" he tells Cho "is one big co-incidence." Exactly.
It sounds better in Latin: "Congruo est occultus compages subter supter animadverto." Coindence is the hidden architecture of reality. This is another way of saying - Intention. And human intentions / will (however cloaked or labeled) interact with the syncs.
Meanwhile, the drama of the Mentalist hews to its programmes.

I'm going to have to watch this episode again. I'm conflicted. It seemed rather disjointed to me...unsettling in a way. Not quite sure what to make of Patrick actually CREATING evidence to keep higher ups from realizing that he doesn't actually think the man he killed was Red John.

One of the most importat scenes is offscene. Thomas Maier's death. He was the father of Panzer's first victim - Molly.
Lisbon and Jane hear that he committed suicide and that is supposedly when Jane gets to work planting Panzer's blood on his shirt and writing his suicide note in which Thomas claims that he revenged himself on Panzer for killing his daughter and then killed himself.
This suicide is too convenient to be believable.
Lisbon and Jane (in agreement) wanted Darcy / FBI off the Panzer case. Lisbon is the one who knows that Jane thinks Red John is alive and if this is true, he did get himself acquitted for killing Carter (in cold blood).
The fact that Carter (conveniently) turns out to be a serial killer should not provide the O.K. factor.
She mightn't know that Jane was not deceived and killed the RJ decoy, but she knows enough to know that Jane has capability and motive to get Darcy off the Panzer case.
Darcy is smart enough to know that the suspect she's looking for is someone who avenged the insult to Red John by Panzer. Jane wants her to think it was a vengeance killing. But then, who else but Jane thinks that Panzer was the San Joachin killer?
Jane is running mind games on just about everyone.
And Lisbon should be putting this together. The deal breaker should have been that video from source UNKNOWN uploaded to the Major Crime Server - a video file transferred from outside the CBI with the 'she's cute. this is going to be fun' text file. This shouldn't be possible. But then it shouldn't have been possible to breach the CBI firewall and change the surveillance videos in the Boscoe killing.
Only someone who knows all about puzzles, codes, games of logic etc could do this kind of thing. Lisbon should be thinking of Jane. She should be thinking about Thomas Maier's 'suicide'.
