Here's the thread for Pretty Red Balloon. Patrick will get a visit from a former client whose son has been kidnapped. Sounds like a great epi to me!!

The promos made this episode look intriguing so I was really looking forward to it. I love that funny actor (Fake psychic Mr. Glass) who played the unflappable pizza delivery guy on "Two and a Half Men". But in the end I thought the episode was predictable, lackluster and that didn't do much to advance the characters, their relationships, or the show.

This episode was interesting because I think it showed two different emotions.1. Jane having memories of when he was a con artist. I think for the most part he didn't like going back to recalling the 10 years earlier and he really had to struggle control his emotions(almost shutting down) on how he felt about when he had cheated people out of their money. Then he had to go back and become that person again because it was the only way to solve that case. That part of the story seemed to be more about what the characters expected or wanted him to be rather than believing he had changed and was trying to move on and be honest. The second emotion was with VanPelt and her struggle. I think Rigsby seemed worried about her. So I hope the writers will eventually tell us about her past trauma as the season progresses. Maybe in the Red Shirt episode. :) I like how Jane was able to trick Mr. Glass with the tape recorder at the end. One other thing I was thinking about was. The 10 years earlier seems to take place 1-2 years before Jane's family died because of RJ. I wonder whether Jane was helping the police at this point? Back then, did he decide on his own to help the police with the RJ investigation(going on for about 4 years) or did someone suggest it to him and he thought it would be a good idea to get more publicity for himself? I thought it was an excellent episode. I loved Jane's psychic reading and the way he got rid of the fake psychic. I think Grace is struggling with what happened to her. It was heart warming to see her hugg the little boy at the end. I can't wait for more.

We know that Red John has people working for him at the CBI. I believe there are more than just O'Laughlin. Did Jane's antics as "psychic" make Red John mad since Red John knows that psychics do not exist? Now that Jane has denounced being a psychic he absolutely hates other people pretending to be psychic. We saw that in this very episode. Is that same hate what made RJ despise Jane and then when Jane went on tv talking about RJ...that is the straw that broke the camel's back? Then we have the note accusing Jane of being a fraud and the murders of Angela and Charlotte? Hmmmm. Do you find this valuable? |

Random Thoughts on the Episode:While this wasn't the very best Mentalist episode, I still liked it. I loved Jane's declaration to Lisbon at the beginning in which he stated "I gotta be me. I can't change who I am." Yet, despite telling Beth Flint over and over that he is not a psychic, Jane did revert back to his old psychic antics to find Connor and close the case. I can't help but think about how the Jane we knew from Seasons 1 up to the Season 3 finale, absolutely hated gun--to the point of holding them with a fingertip and thumb when he did have to touch one and having all sorts of bad comments about them to the team. And still, we find him with a gun in his coat pocket in 324 that he used to kill who he thought to be the infamous Red John. I am also reminded of his former occupation of fraudulent psychic with the slick hair and suits and how he was transformed to the Jane we know now with loose curls and wrinkled shirts and waist coats. Jane likes to think he is who he is, but in reality, he has changed quite a bit. Does anyone else find it weird that Cho found the red balloon? With as many police and investigators that were at the crime scene, wouldn't someone have found it before the team got there? I love the beautiful teasets on the shelf in Beth's kitchen. I love the solid red one especially. You can see these in the background of the first meeting of Beth, Jane, Lisbon and Mr. Glass. Nothing pertinent to the case or RJ here...I just noticed them being a tea lover myself. :-) I noticed the reference to Yolanda, VanPelt's cousin. There must be a purpose to this. Will we get to meet Yolanda in the future or is this just another reference to a "psychic?" Still yet, were we meant to remember something from the Pilot? Perhaps Jane's distaste for "psychics" from the beginning. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Do you find this valuable? |

From the first time we saw Brady Walton The Balloon Man, as VanPelt interviewed him, it was pretty obvious he was involved somehow....he's soooo creepy looking. Loved the scene when Jane puts the note in Rigsby's pocket! That's the Jane we know and love! My, my, how VanPelt has changed after killing Craig O'Laughlin. Did anyone else see the vengence in her face as she shot The Balloon Man? Then she admitted...."I feel pretty good actually. I'm starting to enjoy shooting people." Then poor Rigsby's face that said, "Are you kidding me? You need help!!" I didn't believe the "Gotcha!" from VanPelt at all. I think she did enjoy shooting that man. I liked how Jane called the kidnapping of Connor "tangled" and "interesting." Then the case ends up being over the strange love of the older stepson toward Beth. Jane has a way of knowing cases are going to be strange love cases, like the Todd Johnson murders from Red Moon. Another tie to strange love cases...Bret Stiles mentioned how RJ's interest in Jane was a "form of love." After Conner was brought home, why was Beth putting him to bed in the daytime? The light is shining in from the windows. Was this just a mistake or did I miss something? My biggest observation!!! At the end, during the religious conversation Lisbon and Jane were having, did anyone notice the driveway??? It resembles the Visualize eye!! I may read too much into things, but I think this is a clue from the writers again. (Like the floor of the mall pavillion in 324 and 401) Funny how religion is brought up and we see something likened to the Visualize eye!!! I love it!! This is a Red John episode after all!! Quotes I liked:Jane (speaking to Beth Flint): So what was I to say? You were never going to have a child. Nobody wants a gloomy psychic. Jane: What was I thinking? I was thinking love is strange and something about a sandwich. Lisbon: Cheer up. Jane: Oh I'm cheery. Lisbon: You heard her. You gave her hope. Jane: I didn't give her hope. I sold her hope. Lisbon: I think hope is worth it at any price. Jane: Are you running for office now? Do you find this valuable? |

Well, while others are trying to read D&M into the first scene, for me it was sublimely simple and the reason I watch this show. Jane, in his own sweet and adorable way - I love you and I want to marry you Patrick Jane - was simply re-establishing the status quo of the team dynamic; and making L, in particular, feel comfortable again. Firstly L sails in, file under arm, almost inhaling the satisfaction of Being Back. The last one to return, and now the boss again, she needs to get back to business. And how is this to be achieved? J must banter. She must play by the rules, as she's supposed to do- yeah right missy - and J must subvert the rules and play naughty-boy -games with L, as he's supposed to do. Thus they all return to normalcy. During this little session, he will brazenly say that he's who he is and he Won't change, (see the nod to his murdering Whoever); and she's who she is and Can't change. There you have it. Everything in its place and all's right with the world. However, he's also told her it's okay to be herself, even though she's being watched from upstairs; and that everything in general is okay. Nice going Jane. When Cho announces the case, L goes into boss-barking-orders mode, G says,'it's good to have her back' and J walks off, with that gorgeous smile on his face, saying, 'yes it is.' Job done. And just quietly, the banter wasn't just to encourage L. J needed it too, to bring him to equilibrium again. Other trivia: If that man had held my hand, and said the words, 'beautiful baby boy' to me, and smiled with his eyes the way he did to Kelli Williams, I swear to deity, I would've paid him a king's ransom. That was worth its weight in gold, (and of course it's another nod to the question, Is he really a psychic who has denied his gift?) Do you find this valuable? |

As for Grace: If any in Hellerville are reading this tripe, please! move it along. Here is the perfect opportunity to Develop a Character. I know it's not your wont, but just consider it this once. I'm presuming the euphoric giggling and inane comments re shooting bad guy, are part of her untreated trauma. If you drop the ball on this I'm telling you, I'll be mighty peeved. And since L was fairly sweating with fear, at being in the middle of a shooting again, that has to be addressed too. I'm counting on you, writers. You can't leave us panting for answers the way you have in the past. Now about Jane and his dodgy past. Firstly we're told to swallow that J murdered the wrong crook. Okay, I can take that on board, since I liked the idea from the get go. I'm not the moralist that some seem to be.... Not two episodes later, we're now shown another piece of bar stewardry from J. His cra pulence knows no bounds apparently. If you go much further with this J-demonising, I'll actually start thinking he IS a truly rotten piece of work; and those blue eyes won't be enough to get him off the hook. There has to be a balance between the crucifying and the resurrecting. There's a limit to the number of actual and psychic murders I can tolerate per season. Loved the mastery of Cho this ep. Hard - ***ed and brilliant. Almost an element of raging against the machine with him, in the interrogation scene. I'll show you. Loved it. Do you find this valuable? |

AngryLittlePrincess, it interesting the point you bring up about RJ and Jane. Jane seems to have a dislike for people calling themselves psychic ever since season 1. An example would be Krystina Frye and Jane doing his best to prove she as not a psychic or even the Mars character. RJ doesn't like anyone being a phoney. However this change in Jane's character does not seem to stop RJ from tormenting him. So does RJ believe that he is a true psychic (not phoney) or is there something else going on? On a side note this anger against those who are phoney does have a similarity to the novel "Catcher in the Rye" there are some references to ths novel and author in show. Do you find this valuable? |

"After Conner was brought home, why was Beth putting him to bed in the daytime? The light is shining in from the windows. Was this just a mistake or did I miss something?Princess, tbh, I just thought Connor was put to bed in the daytime, because he would've been exhausted and in shock, ( having been kidnapped, locked up, bound and gagged.) The fight-or-flight response thing. Usually the treatment for shock is to be lying down, preferably somewhere comfortable and warm. Sleeping it off I guess you would say. Do you find this valuable? |

Doesn't Beth look like Dr Gilliam Foster in the now discontinued Lie to Me ?For a moment I thought it is a cross over / Lie to Me resurrection :) I wonder what happen when Jane meets Cal Lightman :) Do you find this valuable? |
