I bet I know who Red John is
Mar 10 2010, 10:33 PM EST
Ready for shock?I might be the first person to guess this... But I'm quite certain... Grace Van Pelt. The entire series is based on the bad guy being somebody we've known from the beginning, and often is who we expect last. The most innocent seeming person. Here are some of my reasons. Lamest reason, she has red hair. Better reasons - She's the newest member of the CBI. (And Red John has already proven s/he can get into the CBI) Jane suspects she is hiding a 'deep emotional trauma'. Something she won't even admit to herself. Serial killers often have some kind of trauma, a messed up childhood or abusive ect, (at least in these cop shows I can't vouch for real life) and most often they create a world around them where the trauma did not exist. :D She is dating a killer at one point. I don't think that was accidental. She has Rigsby. If I were Red John, in the CBI, I'd want at least one gun who I knew could not shoot me no matter what. She's been purposely stringing along Rigsby too, blowing hot and cold in amazing ways. Unreasonable even for PMS. She is always challenging what Jane believes. She's the last person I'd expect, which makes her the most likely by the show's standards. Red John needs an in at the CBI so it makes sense. Red John WANTS to be close to Jane. Grace is always noticing things and holding back. Jane often calls her out to announce these things. It's like she's trying to hide how smart she is. Grace hesitates when Lisbon announces they are off the Red John Case. She also says that as a CBI agent they are quote 'fighting evil and injustice' something cop shows are famous for having serial killers disillusioned as. Grace also seems to try too hard to seem ignorant Just some thoughts I could be wrong of course, I think it's a solid theory though 5 out of 9 found this valuable. Do you?

I don't know Jane HATES this guy. I think if he was working with Red John everyday, then he would get the sense that Van Pelt was the one responsible. He would be able to tell that she was hiding something major (not just pent up feelings). However, I can see were you are getting this. It would make sense if they picked her for it, but I just don't think this is really feasible.

Personally I think Red John would be more evil that Van Pelt seems but I guess that's probably what's going to be the twist of the tv show... making it someone we would least expect. Also I had to point out something else... from the Season 2 Finale with the Red John video to the time "Dr. Joe NH" contacted Jane over the computer, even to the new episode when Red John posts the video of him stalking an fbi agent... Van Pelt is the first one to find/see all of these.Shes always on that computer of hers 3 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

Yes, it is that "Dr. Joe NH" find by Van Pelt and her find in other instances where the CBI gets hacked, that first raised my suspicions of her being Red John. The one thing that makes me not want to bite on those suspicions and say, "Aha! It's her!" is that if you notice her alone moments, she's genuinely a good person and can't stand people who hurt others. By alone moments, I mean when none of her co-workers or anyone else is watching. She could let her true facial expressions show then, but she remains true to her self. She doesn't have a sinister look or change up expressions when no one is watching her. When she sits and contemplates alone, you can tell she's truly on the good guys' side and is truly bothered by the gory, gruesome cases with which they have to deal.

What about the blind woman. When she calls Jane in episode 4-13, she says that "Roy" (Red John) is there at her house. When the CBI and FBI arrive in a hurry, they find the Morgue Attendant dead in the closet. The frame shots showing the guy in her house when she made the call could have been the Morgue Attendant. She could be "Red John" or "Red Jane" in this case. 1) She's the first sight upon entering. Jane said in a previous episode that Red John likes to make his calling sign the first thing seen when entering his crime scene. Since there is no sign, she is the first sight as a replacement. 2)She's playing that classical music on the piano and Red John leaves that music behind at his crimes. 3)She's calm, cool, and collected for having a dead body in her closet and a pool of blood leaking out. She's blind, not dumb. She has to know that the dead body is there. Her sense of hearing and smell are not gone, as a matter of fact, they are most likely more keen than a seeing persons. She has to have heard something, or smelled something. How could a body be killed and/or dragged into her closet and she not hear it? Can she not smell the blood? 4.Red John ties up all loose ends. He even went so far as to get an ice cold body out of the morgue to tie up loose ends. He kills all associates who become a liability. Anybody working for him who gets caught or found out by the CBI, Red John kills them or manipulates them to commit suicide. Why would he leave her alive knowing that she is the only one who can positively identify him? He knows that even though she cannot see with her eyes, she can "see" with her hands. Yet, there she sits, playing the piano, totally unharmed. I think she may be "Red Jane" instead of there being a "Red John" 7 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |

As a drama, the Mentalist continues to lay down false leads and misdirects around what are (at this time) the main Red John possibilities. The drama will conclude however the writers want it to conclude. But if the story is going to 'hang together' - the leads that will eventually lead to the disclosure of Red John will have been forseen from the beginning. This would be especially true of a plot that has been tightly controlled by the Red metanym from episode 1. From Season 1, we have many such leads. In 1.11 "Red John's Friends" we are introduced to the network. The writing on the wall could be deciphered as 'he is many'. Hence a network - as in "Red John's Friends" Jane isn't particularly interested in the clue. Why? He draws the correct conclusion: "He [Red John] is more powerful than I had thought." This can't be news to him, but it will be news to Lisbon. In episode 2.8 "His Red Right Hand" we meet a Red John assassin: Rebecca. Another asset in the CBI. She knows Red John. But it is possible that under hypnosis she does not recognize him in his day job. She does, however, recognize how both Red John and Patrick Jane look at people the same way - seeing right through them - a quality that is 'spooky'. Episode 3.9 "Red Moon" revisits the Red John network. Todd Johnson may well be an apprentice. Killing police might be an initiation. He had to kill his girlfriend when she got too close. Jane coaches him through his initiation and how to handle the 'revenge' cover story. But Johnson fails the test and agrees to talk - big mistake. Before he is killed, he tells Jane about the 'big picture' which will blow your mind. So a crime network with big objectives. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

If the above leads are true leads and not misdirects, the story of Rosalind phoning Patrick Jane is explainable if Patrick Jane is Red John. Red John's network is being run out of the CBI. It has assets all over the state. Or as Jane puts it in "Red John's Friends" - he has friends [ assets of his network and mind controlled agents ] all over the state. Like the character Tolman Bunting in the Valaquette murder - he is "juiced." I think that Rosalind and Red John are lovers. And there is a happy ending to "Red John's Footsteps" which is shown as Jane drinking tea and listening to her play Bach. (Or was this a flashback to Roy listening to her play Bach.) Come to think about it, the first Red John killing shown in the series (that is not a flashback) may have occurred to insert Rosalind into the CBI investigation. If they are lovers, then Red John will be visiting her from time to time and he will need a cover story with the CBI to make a trip to San Angelo.. So there would be an official reason and the real reason. Maybe all she has to do is phone him at his office at the CBI. An agent like the assassin in "Strawberries and Cream" could then be dispatched to provide a body. The code for a Red John visit up to San Angelo could be: "Roy is here." 1 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

i have suspected i know who Red John is for a while, but I am even more sure now than ever that I actually know. I am now convinced that the character that has only recently started to be referred to by the name of "Ron" who is a CBI officer in the same office as Patrick Jane and his team is Red John. Ron is a character who has quite often (and progressively more often) been seen in the background of many scenes, he sits at the desk next to Rigsby, furthest away from Jane's couch. So many parallel's/connections in the story line so far ... at least there are for me...take a closer look at this guy, and make your own mind up...i'm already sold. 4 out of 6 found this valuable. I Agree Jane HATES this guy. I think its Brett partridge from the pilot episode 1 and season 2 episode 23. The guy who cleans up after the crime scenes. watch closely how him and Jane interact with eachother
