- Red John is responsible for the murder of Patrick Jane's wife and daughter.
- Red John leaves a symbol when he murders: A smiley face drawn clockwise with the victim's blood using three fingers of his right hand... wearing a kitchen rubber glove. He always puts this on a wall so that it is the first thing that someone sees as they come into the room - so they know before they see the body what has happened.
- Red John began murdering in 1998. One of his accomplices, Orville Tanner, was convicted of murder and later died of heart disease in prison hospital. At his trial in 1998 he claimed that Red John was the actual killer and he was only an accomplice, but no-one believed him.
- Red John kills by cutting open his victims and letting them bleed to death.
- Red John dated a blind woman named Rosalind who described him as follows "Just under 6 feet tall; not muscular, but not soft either; short, straight hair; a gentle voice; rough, strong hands; he smelled of pine and nails and earth; and he liked to listen to me play the piano (Bach - he admired his rigour)."
- Red John used the pseudonom Roy Tagliaferro (which means "cut iron") and owned a company called Cut Iron Properties which he used to buy a farm called Sparrows Peak where he intended to lure Jane and hold him prisoner, among other things... He went to quite a lot of trouble to set a trap for Jane.
- Red John used Orville Tanner's son, Dumar, as his accomplice in Red John's Footsteps.
- Red John knows about electronics and computers - he's hacked into the CBI database and he knows how to set up surveillance equipment.
- Dumar implied in Red John's Footsteps that Red John intends to come after Lisbon as well.
