My first thought was that he (his character) was an extraordinarily attractive man, to which she responded that she was not bowled over by his looks, really. I said, well naturally. We are in a TV/film era where the tall dark sort of man rules the roost when it comes to the swoon factor. Despite being naturally blonde myself, her observation was both true and irritating. Besides, I meant extraordinarily "attractive" in the "whole man" sense. He's very kind, but also not naturally inclined towards exposing himself to danger UNLESS his emotions are high - then he will. In one way I find the Mentalist to be a very clever show because in its scripts it screws around with gender roles. He is the softer "partner" ; his female detective partner is or seems tougher. Jane seems to be showing the world how a kind, caring even nurturing man need not simultaneously be effeminate in his looks or the way he carries himself. I've not read whether or not this is true but I would have to suspect that Jane has a strong following among gay men and perhaps among certain lesbians as well who appreciate the features of Jane's personality, which are soft and nuturing. Once I began considering the context of his character -- the con-man, the debonair trickery, I cannot help but wonder whether Jane's character might be a bisexual. NOT, NOT, NOT because he has feminine qualities but because
, being blonde and all he has been pre-christened to move the show into SCARY FOR THE NETWORK show by giving FOR THE FIRST TIME, a prime-time male bisexual!
